When my sixteen-year-old stepson arrived for the summer, I expected the same polite boy I remembered from previous visits. Instead, Jake seemed distant, uninterested, and determined to ignore every rule in our home. My husband, Mark, and I were raising our two younger children, Emma and Noah, and I hoped the summer would help them reconnect with their older brother. Emma and Noah were upset, and it was obvious that Jake had ignored the responsibilities we had given him. Soon afterward, I noticed money missing from my purse. Although I suspected what had happened, I wanted proof before making accusations. Instead of arguing, I decided to create a harmless lesson that would show Jake the importance of honesty and personal responsibility. With help from a trusted family friend, I carefully arranged a situation that would encourage him to reflect on the choices he had been making.
A few days later, the lesson unfolded exactly as planned.
