21-Year-Old Student Thought He Had ‘Fresher’s Flu’ — Days Later, His Family Faced Every Parent’s Worst Nightmare

When 21-year-old Lucas Martin returned home complaining of a pounding headache, exhaustion, and feeling generally unwell, his family initially believed he was suffering from the common “fresher’s flu” — a mild illness many students pick up when they begin university life or spend time around large groups of people. Lucas had recently graduated from the University of Liverpool and was looking ahead to the next chapter of his life, filled with ambition, plans, and excitement for the future. At first, there seemed to be no reason to fear that anything more serious was happening.
But within only a few days, the situation changed dramatically. What appeared to be an ordinary virus quickly became a devastating medical emergency. Lucas’s early symptoms were easy to mistake for flu: tiredness, fever, headache, and slight confusion. According to his brother, Connor Martin, the family thought it felt like “a really bad virus.” There were no obvious warning signs that immediately pointed to meningitis, such as a distinctive rash or strong sensitivity to light. Because of that, no one realized how dangerous his condition had become.
As the days passed, Lucas’s health began to deteriorate rapidly. His confusion worsened, and his ability to communicate became more difficult. On September 10, his father found him struggling to speak clearly, which immediately raised serious concern. The family rushed him to the hospital, where doctors quickly recognized the severity of the situation and placed Lucas in an induced coma in an effort to give his body a chance to fight the infection. Tragically, despite medical intervention, Lucas passed away just two days later, on September 12.
His death left his family heartbroken and searching for answers. Connor later described Lucas as “a force of nature” — someone full of energy, ideas, kindness, and determination. He was the kind of person who brought joy to others and made a lasting impression on everyone he met. His family remembered him not only for his ambition, but also for his warmth, humor, and ability to lift the spirits of those around him.
In the aftermath of his passing, Lucas’s loved ones came to understand how crucial awareness can be when it comes to meningitis. The illness can develop quickly, and in some cases, it may not show the classic symptoms people expect. His family now urges others not to dismiss serious symptoms as just the flu, especially when someone becomes confused, extremely weak, feverish, or suddenly worsens. Connor’s message is simple but urgent: if something feels wrong, take action and seek medical help immediately.
To honor Lucas’s life and continue the positive impact he had on others, his family launched Looky’s Aid, a charity created in his memory. The organization supports young people through scholarships and health awareness programs, helping others pursue opportunities while also spreading potentially life-saving information. Through this work, Lucas’s legacy continues to grow.
His story is now being shared across the UK and beyond as a powerful reminder to students, parents, and families that even an illness that seems ordinary can sometimes be far more serious. Lucas’s life was cut tragically short, but his memory lives on through love, awareness, and the hope that other families may be spared the same heartbreak.
