Blue Fleet on the Beach: What Are These Strange Plastic-Looking Ovals Washing Ashore?

If you’ve ever taken a walk along the coast after a strong storm and noticed thousands of translucent, electric-blue ovals blanketing the sand, you might have thought you were looking at an environmental disaster. With their rigid, clear sails on top and soft, jelly-like blue bodies underneath, they look uncannily like mass-produced pieces of discarded purple-blue plastic.
Beachgoers often panic and ask: “I found thousands of these translucent blue, plastic-looking ovals washed up on the beach today… Are they dangerous?”
The answer is a fascinating mix of marine biology, meteorology, and evolutionary physics. You aren’t looking at pollution—you are looking at a massive landing of Velella velella, commonly known as the “By-the-Wind Sailors.”
Meet the By-the-Wind Sailor
Despite their appearance, a Velella is not a true jellyfish. It is a hydrozoan and a close relative of the infamous Portuguese Man o’ War. However, unlike a single jellyfish organism, each Velella is actually a floating colony of specialized tiny individual organisms (polyps) all connected together, working as a team to survive.
The anatomy of this creature is a biological masterpiece:
- The Sail: The stiff, clear triangular crest on top is made of chitin (the same durable material found in crab shells and insect exoskeletons). It acts as a literal sail.
- The Float: The blue oval base is a flat, gas-filled disc that keeps the colony perfectly buoyant at the very surface of the ocean.
- The Color: Their striking blue color isn’t just for show; it acts as a natural camouflage against predatory birds from above and shields them from intense UV sun damage.
Nature’s Left-Handed and Right-Handed Sailors
What makes Velella velella incredibly unique from an evolutionary standpoint is their dependency on the wind. Because they float on the surface and have no way to swim, they are completely at the mercy of global wind patterns.
To ensure the survival of the species, nature split them into two distinct designs: left-handed and right-handed sails.
Left-handed Velellas have sails aligned so that the wind blows them to the right of the wind direction, while right-handed ones sail to the left. Under normal conditions, this clever evolutionary trick keeps them floating safely out in the open ocean, spinning in massive clockwise or counterclockwise circular currents.
However, when massive spring or summer storms change the direction of prevailing coastal winds, the wind catches their sails and drives millions of them directly toward the shoreline, causing these spectacular mass strandings.
Are They Dangerous?
The big question everyone asks when they see them on the sand is whether they can cause a nasty sting.
Because they are cousins of the Portuguese Man o’ War, people naturally get terrified. Luckily, Velella velella are not highly dangerous to humans. They do possess tiny stinging cells (nematocysts) dangling underneath their blue discs, but they use these exclusively to catch microscopic plankton.
For humans, the venom is very weak, and the stingers usually cannot pierce thick human skin.
